Arequipa’s position in the southern Andes puts it within striking distance of landscapes that would anchor an entire itinerary elsewhere. The Colca Canyon — one of the deepest canyons in the world — is the primary draw, but the day-trip options extend in every direction: a salt lake that fills with flamingos in the wet season, a valley of dormant volcanoes covered in obsidian, and one of the most significant petroglyph sites in South America. None of these require specialist equipment. All require time — most of the best destinations here are at least 3–4 hours from the city.

Colca Canyon — The Main Event

At 3,270 metres deep in its deepest section, Colca Canyon is approximately twice as deep as the Grand Canyon. It is also a working agricultural valley — the terraced hillsides (andenes) were built by the Collagua and Cabana peoples before Inca rule and are still farmed today. The canyon floor contains villages connected by footpaths, hot springs, and a river that runs to the Pacific via the Río Majes.

The journey from Arequipa crosses the Pampa Cañahuas plateau at approximately 4,800m, passing through the Reserva Nacional Salinas y Aguada Blanca where herds of vicuña graze at roadside. This drive alone — with El Misti, Chachani, and Ampato volcanoes visible simultaneously — is worth the trip.

Cruz del Condor is the primary viewpoint: a cliff-edge platform that hangs above a 1,000m drop where Andean condors (Vultur gryphus) rise on morning thermals. Sightings are not guaranteed but are consistent between May and October. Arrive between 08:00 and 09:30 for the best chances. Entry to the canyon area costs approximately S/70 as of 2026 (the Boleto Turístico Colca, valid for 2 days); this is charged at the control point on the road before Chivay.

Chivay (3,635m) is the service town at the top of the canyon, 3.5–4 hours from Arequipa. It has hotels, restaurants, and the La Calera hot springs (entry approximately S/15 as of 2026, open daily 05:00–19:00) — outdoor thermal pools at approximately 40°C that are highly welcome after canyon hiking.

Cabanaconde (3,287m) is 60km further into the canyon and the base for descending to the canyon floor. The descent to the river (Oasis de Sangalle) is approximately 1,200m vertical, taking 2–3 hours down and 3–4 hours up. The oasis has basic accommodation and natural swimming pools — some visitors spend a night there. Most day visitors to Cabanaconde do a partial descent (to the first river viewpoint) and return.

Laguna de Salinas

A high-altitude salt lake at 4,300m, approximately 70km east of Arequipa in the shadow of Pichu Pichu volcano. The experience changes completely depending on the season.

Dry season (May–November): The lake is largely a white salt flat — an otherworldly landscape of cracked white crust with the volcanoes rising above. Viscachas (wild chinchilla relatives) live on the rocky shores. Very few visitors. The high-altitude silence is remarkable.

Wet season (December–April): The lake fills with shallow water that warms in the sun, creating ideal conditions for flamingos. All three South American flamingo species — Chilean, Andean, and James’s — congregate here, sometimes in numbers exceeding 10,000. The best months for flamingos are January through March.

Getting there: no public transport serves the lake directly. Tour agencies run half-day excursions for approximately USD 25–USD 40 per person as of 2026, departing Arequipa at 07:00 and returning by early afternoon. Private taxis charge approximately S/120–S/160 return (negotiate for the driver to wait 1.5–2 hours at the lake).

Valle de los Volcanes

An extraordinary volcanic landscape in the Andes Province, approximately 170km from Arequipa (roughly 4 hours by road). The valley floor is covered by approximately 80 small volcanic cones — the result of fissure eruptions from Andahua volcano over thousands of years — alongside lava flows, obsidian fields, and impact craters. The scenery reads like a high-altitude moonscape, with inhabited villages scattered between the volcanic formations.

This is a long day or better as an overnight: Andahua town (3,490m) at the valley entrance has basic hospedajes for approximately S/40–S/70 per night as of 2026. Combine the drive with a stop at the Toro Muerto petroglyph field (see below) for a logical two-destination day. Tour agencies in Arequipa run combined Valle de los Volcanes + Toro Muerto excursions for approximately USD 45–USD 70 per person as of 2026 for a long day trip.

Toro Muerto Petroglyphs

One of the largest petroglyph fields in the world: approximately 5,000 volcanic boulders carved with geometric patterns, human figures, animals, and representations of condors and llamas. The site is in the Majes Valley approximately 120km from Arequipa (2.5–3 hours), carved by multiple cultures across a period of roughly 2,000 years starting from approximately 1000 AD.

Entry costs approximately S/10 as of 2026; open daily. The walk through the boulder field takes 2–3 hours depending on how thoroughly you explore. No formal path through the field exists — navigation is free. The site is at approximately 1,400m elevation (lower than Arequipa), so the heat in the Majes Valley can be intense in the dry season; go early and carry water.

Combined transport from Arequipa by public bus reaches Corire (the nearest town) in approximately 3 hours for approximately S/15–S/20; a mototaxi from Corire to the site costs approximately S/10–S/15. Tour agencies in Arequipa also run excursions combining Toro Muerto with the nearby Aplao area.

Reserva Nacional Salinas y Aguada Blanca

The high-altitude reserve that the Colca Canyon road crosses through is itself worth attention. The reserve covers 366,936 hectares at 3,800–6,000m elevation and is one of the best places in the Arequipa region to see vicuña, flamingos, Andean geese, and puna hawks from a vehicle without a long hike.

The reserve has no separate entry fee for transit visitors on the Colca road. Dedicated wildlife-watching excursions into the reserve (not the Colca Canyon beyond) run for approximately USD 20–USD 35 per person as of 2026 from Arequipa. The drive is typically early morning — before 07:00 — when vicuña and alpaca herds are most active near the roadside.

Practical Notes

The drives from Arequipa to most destinations involve significant altitude gain. Laguna de Salinas (4,300m), the Colca road plateau (4,800m), and Valle de los Volcanes involve hours above 4,000m. If you have arrived in Arequipa from sea level recently, allow at least one full day in the city (2,335m) before venturing to these heights.

For Colca Canyon specifically, reputable agencies that have operated for years include Pablo Tour, Giardino Tours, and Andina Travel. Independent bus transport to Chivay runs from the Terminal Terrestre in Arequipa (approximately S/15–S/25, roughly 3 hours). From Chivay, shared taxis to Cruz del Condor and Cabanaconde run throughout the morning. If you prefer to lock in a guide before arriving, browse Arequipa day trips and tours for city and countryside options.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I visit Colca Canyon as a day trip from Arequipa?
Technically yes, but it makes for an exhausting 14–16 hour day. The canyon is approximately 3.5–4 hours from Arequipa by road. A day trip gets you to Cruz del Condor for condor sightings and a brief look at the rim viewpoints, but nothing more. Most visitors find the overnight format — staying in Chivay or Cabanaconde — far more rewarding: you get sunset and sunrise in the canyon, time to descend to the river, and the condor sightings are better in early morning. Overnight tours from Arequipa typically cost USD 35–USD 65 per person as of 2026 including transport, guide, accommodation, and entry.
When is the best time to see condors at Cruz del Condor?
Condors ride thermal currents generated by the canyon walls warming in the morning sun. The most reliable window for sightings is 08:00–10:30. After 11:00, the thermals weaken and the birds typically move deeper into the canyon. Most tours from Arequipa are timed to arrive at Cruz del Condor between 08:00 and 09:00. Condor sightings are most consistent during the dry season (May–October), though they occur year-round.
What is the Laguna de Salinas and how do I get there?
Laguna de Salinas is a high-altitude salt lake at approximately 4,300m, about 70km east of Arequipa. During the dry season (May–November) the lake bed is largely exposed white salt flats; during the wet season it fills with shallow water and becomes a flamingo habitat — pink flamingos (three species) can number in the thousands from January through April. Reach it by tour (approximately USD 25–USD 40 per person for a half-day excursion as of 2026) or by private taxi (approximately S/120–S/160 return, negotiate for the driver to wait). No public transport runs directly to the lake.
