Lima to Arequipa: Flights, Bus and What to Expect
Arequipa sits roughly 1,000 km south of Lima, making it one of the most common long-distance journeys in Peru. You have two realistic options: a short flight or an overnight bus. Both have genuine merit depending on your budget, schedule, and appetite for road travel through the Andes.
Flying Lima to Arequipa
A direct flight takes approximately 1 hour 30 minutes from Jorge Chávez International Airport (LIM) to Rodríguez Ballón International Airport (AQP). It is by far the fastest option and the one most travellers choose if time matters.
Airlines serving the route:
- LATAM Airlines — the dominant carrier, with multiple daily departures. Fares typically run from approximately PEN 250–550 one way (as of 2026) depending on how far in advance you book and the fare class. The lowest fares sell quickly and are non-refundable.
- Sky Airline — a Chilean low-cost carrier that entered the Peruvian domestic market. Often cheaper than LATAM at around PEN 180–380 for basic economy. Luggage fees apply, so factor those in.
- JetSmart — another low-cost option with occasional promotional fares below PEN 150 one way. Limited luggage allowances on base fares.
Booking tips:
- Book at least 2–3 weeks ahead for the best fares. Last-minute flights can cost two or three times the advance price.
- Tuesday and Wednesday departures are generally cheaper than weekend travel.
- Most flights depart Lima in the morning (06:00–10:00) and early evening. The morning window is popular with business travellers, so book that first.
- Check in online and aim to travel with carry-on only on low-cost carriers to avoid baggage surcharges.
- Arequipa airport is small and around 8 km from the city centre. A taxi to Miraflores (the main hotel district) costs approximately PEN 25–40 and takes 20–30 minutes.
Bus from Lima to Arequipa
The overland route covers roughly 1,010 km and takes 14–18 hours depending on the operator, the number of stops, and road conditions through the Andes. It is a serious journey, but the scenery through the coastal desert and mountain approaches can be striking — and a quality overnight bus is genuinely comfortable.
Cruz del Sur
Cruz del Sur is Peru’s gold-standard long-distance bus operator and the one we recommend for this route. Their VIP Suite class reclines almost flat (around 160 degrees), includes a blanket, pillow, meal service, and dedicated attendant. Fares for the Lima–Arequipa run on VIP Suite cost approximately PEN 200–350 as of 2026.
Their standard Business class is a step down but still roomy, with 180-degree flat seats on some services. Fares start at approximately PEN 130–200.
Cruz del Sur departs Lima from the Gran Terminal Terrestre in La Victoria (Javier Prado Este 1109). Most overnight departures leave between 17:00 and 21:00, arriving in Arequipa early morning — a practical schedule that minimises lost sightseeing time.
Book at: cruzdelsuromibus.com.pe (Peruvian site) or in person at the terminal. Online booking is reliable and recommended during high season (June–August).
Oltursa
Oltursa is the other premium choice on this route. Their Premium Business class is comparable to Cruz del Sur’s VIP, with wide reclining seats, individual screens, USB ports, and meals. Fares are broadly similar: approximately PEN 180–330 for the premium class.
Oltursa departs from Av. Aramburu 1160, Surquillo, Lima. Their buses are well-maintained and staff are attentive. Worth checking alongside Cruz del Sur — sometimes one has better departure times for your schedule.
What to expect on the bus
The route follows the Pan-American Highway south along the coast before turning inland toward Arequipa. It is mostly flat for the first half, then climbs through arid mountain terrain. At night you won’t see much, which is fine for sleeping.
Bring layers. Even on a warm Lima evening, the bus air conditioning can be very cold and you may spend the night at altitude above 2,000 m. The provided blankets help, but a light jacket in your day bag is useful.
Buses stop once or twice at roadside service stations (approximately 2–4 hours into the journey) where you can buy food and use the bathroom. These stops are brief — typically 20–30 minutes.
Flight vs Bus: Which to Choose?
| Flight | Premium Bus | |
|---|---|---|
| Journey time | ~1.5 hours | 14–18 hours |
| Cost (approx.) | PEN 250–550 | PEN 180–350 |
| Arrives at | Central airport | Bus terminal |
| City centre transfer | Taxi 20–30 min | Taxi 10–20 min |
| Scenery | Minimal | Coastal desert + Andes |
| Recommended for | Time-pressed travellers | Budget travellers; those wanting a scenic experience |
For most international travellers on a two-week trip, the flight makes more sense. But if you are on a longer trip with flexible timing, an overnight premium bus saves a night’s accommodation and you arrive rested for a morning start in Arequipa.
Arriving in Arequipa
Arequipa sits at 2,335 m above sea level — high enough that some travellers feel mild altitude symptoms (headache, fatigue) for the first day or two. This is significantly lower than Cusco (3,400 m) or Puno (3,830 m), so most people adapt quickly.
On arrival:
- Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol for the first 24 hours.
- Eat light on your first day — rich food can worsen altitude discomfort.
- Rest for a few hours rather than immediately charging off to the Santa Catalina Monastery or Colca Canyon.
- If symptoms are uncomfortable, coca leaf tea is widely available and commonly used locally.
The city centre (Plaza de Armas) is compact and walkable. Most hotels and restaurants are within easy walking distance once you have settled in.
Getting From the Airport or Bus Terminal
- From the airport: Taxis are available outside arrivals. Agree on a price before you get in or use a metered cab. Approximately PEN 25–40 to the centre as of 2026.
- From the bus terminal: The Cruz del Sur and Oltursa terminals are in Yanahuara district, close to the centre. A taxi costs approximately PEN 10–15.
Rideshare apps (InDriver operates in Arequipa) are sometimes cheaper than street taxis and provide fare transparency.
Booking Ahead
During Peruvian school holidays (July–August) and around Fiestas Patrias (late July), both flights and buses fill quickly. Book at least a week in advance if travelling in high season. Cruz del Sur and Oltursa can be booked online; LATAM and Sky Airline tickets are available on their websites and through comparison tools.
