Iquitos riverfront along the Amazon in the Loreto region of Peru

The river border crossing between Peru and Colombia was closed from 18:00 on 20 June 2026 and reopened at 06:00 on 22 June 2026. The closure was in place to prevent interference with Colombia’s presidential election. The crossing — most commonly used at the tripoint of Leticia (Colombia) and Santa Rosa de Yavarí or Iquitos (Peru) — is now fully operational again.

Who Is Affected

The closure affects passengers travelling overland or by river across the Peru–Colombia border in the Loreto Region, including:

  • Iquitos to Leticia routes by speedboat or cargo vessel on the Amazon River
  • Any onward connections to Tabatinga (Brazil) that involve crossing the Colombian side of the tripoint
  • Private vessels and commercial ferries

It does not affect air travel between Peru and Colombia. Flights between Lima and Bogotá, Medellín, or other Colombian cities continue to operate normally.

Planning a crossing now

The border is now fully open. For those planning future travel between Peru and Colombia via the Amazon tripoint, note that Colombia holds its next presidential election in 2030 — a border closure of this type is unlikely before then. For current crossing information and entry requirements, check our Peru visa requirements page and verify the latest status with your nearest Colombian consulate.

Practical Notes

The Loreto Region is already in a US State Department Level 2 area due to crime linked to drug trafficking and illegal mining near the border. Travellers in this region should read our Peru safety guide and carry copies of all entry documents. The border area is remote, with limited consular access; enrol in your government’s travel registration programme before you go.
