Arequipa Anniversary Festival

Every August, Arequipa marks the anniversary of its Spanish founding on 15 August 1540 with a week of celebrations that shut down the city centre and draw visitors from across southern Peru. The festival is one of the most enthusiastic civic celebrations in the country, with a full programme of cultural events, food traditions, and fireworks spread across several days rather than a single night.

The founding and its significance

Arequipa was established by Francisco Pizarro’s lieutenants in 1540, though the area had been inhabited long before the Spanish arrived. The anniversary is taken seriously by arequipenos as a point of local pride - the city has a strong sense of its own identity separate from Lima, and the festivities reflect that. Local politicians, civic groups, and community organisations all participate in the official programme.

Key events during the week

The main civic ceremony takes place on 15 August, the actual anniversary date, with official speeches and a formal act at the Plaza de Armas. The days surrounding it include:

Noche de las Picanterías: One of the most popular events of the week, this evening sees arequipa’s traditional picanterías (local restaurants serving regional specialities) open their doors for free tastings. Dishes like rocoto relleno, pastel de papa, and adobo de chancho are served to long queues of locals and visitors. Expect crowds and a festive street atmosphere.

Fireworks: Nightly fireworks displays over the Plaza de Armas are a fixture throughout the week, with the largest display on the evening of 15 August. The white sillar stone facades of the Cathedral and the Compañía de Jesús church illuminate spectacularly.

Bullfighting: The Arequipa anniversary bullfighting season at the Plaza de Acho de Arequipa runs across several days during the festival week. Tickets are available at the venue box office and typically sell quickly for the main corridas.

Cultural and folkloric shows: Outdoor concerts and dance performances take place in the Plaza de Armas and surrounding parks throughout the week, many of them free.

• Accommodation in Arequipa fills up in the days around 15 August. Book at least four to six weeks ahead.
• The Plaza de Armas is the hub of most events; many streets nearby are closed to traffic during the festival period.
