Candelaria Festival - Puno

The Feast of the Virgin of Candelaria in Puno is among the largest and most elaborate religious festivals in the Americas. Held each February on the shores of Lake Titicaca, it was declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2014. The festival fuses Catholic devotion to the Virgin Mary with centuries-old Andean ritual, producing a ten-day programme of processions, dance competitions, and music that draws over 200,000 visitors to a city of roughly 150,000 people.

The scale of the event

The numbers involved are genuinely staggering. More than 40,000 dancers and 8,000 musicians participate across the festival’s formal events, representing dance groups and brotherhoods from communities throughout the Puno region and beyond. Over 150 distinct dances are performed, many of which have been passed down within specific communities for generations and carry precise ritual meaning.

Festival structure

The formal programme runs from 2 February through 11 February. The feast day itself, 2 February, begins with a mass at the Puno Cathedral and a daytime procession carrying the image of the Virgin of Candelaria through the city streets. Brass bands and dance troupes in full costume accompany the image, and the crowds lining the route can stretch back dozens of rows deep.

The following days feature the main dance competitions in the city’s stadium. Two categories compete: trajes de luces (sparkling embroidered costumes representing colonial-era fusion dances) and Autóctono (indigenous pre-Columbian dances in traditional dress). The Autóctono category in particular is remarkable for preserving dance forms that predate Spanish colonisation.

The festival closes with the farewell procession on 11 February, when groups perform once more before the image of the Virgin before dispersing.

Getting to Puno

Puno sits at 3,830 metres on the shore of Lake Titicaca, a significant altitude that requires at least one or two days of acclimatisation before you can comfortably attend multi-hour outdoor events. Practical tips

• Book accommodation four to six months ahead. Puno’s hotels sell out for Candelaria earlier than almost any other festival in Peru.
• February is the height of the rainy season on the altiplano. Bring waterproof gear for outdoor events.
• Grandstand seats in the main stadium are ticketed and sell quickly; check the municipality of Puno’s official channels for advance sales.
• The processions through the city streets are free to watch from the roadside.
• Altitude sickness is a genuine risk - carry diamox if prescribed, drink plenty of water, and avoid alcohol on your first day in the city.
